Born in Urfa in 1948, İ. Melih Gökçek graduated from Gazi University, School of Journalism. He started his journalism career in the local Gaziantep Haber newspaper. A parliamentary reporter, Gökçek served as Deputy Director of the Private Secretary at the Ministry of Labor before starting his military service.
In 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014 elections, he was elected as the Mayor of Ankara Metropolitan Municipality. Gökçek became Ankara's longest-serving mayor, elected for five consecutive terms. As a mayor, he was known with his "mega projects" for Ankara.
Melih Gökçek resigned at the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Council meeting on October 28, 2017. At the meeting, he stated that he resigned by the order of President Erdoğan.
Melih Gökçek, who is known to have very close relations with the Gülen Community in the past, faced accusations that he was affiliated with the Gülen Community after the coup attempt on 15 July 2016.
He is the father of Beyaz TV General Broadcasting Coordinator Osman Gökçek.
