He became a publisher with the acquisition of Milliyet in 1979 and later on Hürriyet in 1994. He established Aydın Doğan Foundation in 1996. He was hit by a record $2.5bn tax fine, sending its shares down 20 percent after a year-long confrontation with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
