Born in 1971 in Istanbul, Burak Akbay attended the American College of Switzerland. His first business was starting a newspaper printing press. He founded Sözcü newspaper in 2007. He owns all the shares of Estetik Yayıncılık A.Ş., the company that publishes the newspaper 'Sözcü' as well as its website sozcu.com.tr. He used to be the Chair of the Board of Directors of Estetik Yayıncılık until June 2016, when he resigned. However, he still appears as the publisher ('imtiyaz sahibi').
